Dear Executive Directors and Policy Committee,

See below for an opportunity to join a call tomorrow, Thursday November 9, at 1215pm, with Senator Casey to discuss the impact the proposed elimination of the medical expense deduction in HR1 could have on older Americans and people with disabilities.

NACDD joined with several groups to send a letter in opposition to this provision of HR 1 tax reform bill.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

You’re Invited: A Conversation with Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) on the Proposed Health Tax, Elimination of the Medical Expense Deduction

WHEN: Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at 12:15 p.m. EST

WHAT: LeadingAge is pleased to invite you to a national stakeholder call with Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, on the devastating impact that eliminating the medical expense tax deduction will have for older persons, persons with chronic illness, and persons with disabilities. As you know, the House tax legislation that is currently being debated repeals the deduction individuals can take when they have unreimbursed medical expenses over 10% of their adjusted gross income. Close to 9 million individuals took this deduction in 2015. The average deduction claimed was nearly $10,000, but for families paying out-of-pocket for long-term care for a loved one and persons living in assisted living, nursing homes, and retirement communities, the value of the deduction can be well above that amount, and it is a critical buffer against impoverishment. Senator Casey is deeply concerned about the impact on the people we serve, and we are grateful that he will be joining us.

If you have a question that you would like addressed to the Senator, please send it to Marsha Greenfield at xxxxxx@leadingage.org.  We will share questions as time allows.

Thank you and we look forward to your joining us on Thursday.
