WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) launched
ResistRepeal.org today, a new website dedicated to ensuring that the public's voice is heard as Congress begins the
accelerated consideration of the House Republican bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
“The People’s House must hear the People’s voice,” said Whip Hoyer.
“ResistRepeal.org is an effort to increase transparency and accountability and assure Americans that they have a voice in Congress as Republicans rush their bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act through the legislative
process. Last night, Republicans on the Ways & Means Committee passed the bill in the dead of the night, without holding any hearings or having an analysis of how the bill would impact Americans. It is unacceptable that they would move ahead with this legislation
without any input from the American people, which is why this website is critical.”
“Every American deserves to have their voice heard by Congress in this critical debate about their health care—both supporters and opponents,”
continued Whip Hoyer. “Civic engagement with Congress is enshrined in the Constitution.
ResistRepeal.org is not just an online petition site – it will be shared with Members of Congress so they see the responses of the American people.”
Republicans are rushing their repeal bill through the legislative process, in contrast to the 79 hearings that were held to discuss the Affordable Care Act. Republicans released their bill only 48 hours before holding committee markups, while Democrats released
the initial draft of the ACA 30 days prior to the first committee markup. In addition, Republicans passed their legislation out of the Ways & Means Committee without an analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on how much this bill will cost
taxpayers or how many people will lose coverage under the bill.
ResistRepeal.org will tally and prominently display the opinion of any American who speaks out on this bill through
PopVox.com, a leading non-partisan platform for civic engagement and legislative information. In addition to tallying and prominently displaying all public sentiment, like on this webpage, PopVox allows any person sharing their
opinion on Popvox to also deliver that opinion as an email to that person's individual Representative in Congress, as well as their two Senators. PopVox uses numerous security mechanisms to ensure opinions left are from real people with real addresses.
