Here is a list of states that we have heard are in the process of putting together workgroups or committees to work on state implementation of ESSA. If your state has begun work, and is not listed below, please let me know, so we can share that information with others.

 

Also, success stories of states that have actively engaged with the civil rights community are helpful to pass on to the people working on implementation at the federal level and have been requested by them.

AlabamaGovernor Bentley (R) has established a state implementation committee for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The committee will submit a final ESSA plan by December 1, 2016.

 

Colorado – In May, education officials and representatives from key stakeholder groups will launch a statewide tour to gather the public’s input and feedback on how the state should implement vital components of the ESSA.

 

Hawaii – Governor Ige (D) announced the formation of the Governor’s Team on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

 

Idaho – The Idaho State Department of Education is seeking to engage stakeholders in developing a Consolidated State Plan to implement the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The ESSA Consolidated State Plan, once approved by the Idaho State Board of Education, will be submitted for approval to the Department of Education by February 1, 2017 and Implementation will begin July 1, 2017.

 

Kentucky – Education Commissioner Pruitt plans to name a steering committee for the state’s implementation of ESSA.

 

Maryland ESSA Stakeholder group committee meetings with stakeholders, focus groups, presentation across the State to solicit feedback, surveys, and regular updates to the State Board and local superintendents.

 

Montana – State Superintendent Juneau has appointed 33 educators, parents and district trustees to two work groups that will assist the Office of Public Instruction in developing Montana’s education accountability systems.

 

Pennsylvania – Education Secretary Rivera said his agency is planning a series of stakeholder sessions and workgroup meetings to maximize stakeholder engagement in developing the state plan. Meetings are planned through fall 2016, and Rivera anticipates he will submit a state plan to ED in spring 2017.
