Disability and the Environment: How plastic bans became a disability rights issue and the need for a disability-inclusive approach in the environmental movement

Tuesday, December 10 | 2:00-3:00pm Eastern Time
Call-in Number: 800-832-0736 |Passcode: 6261788

Threats to our environment disproportionately affect people with disabilities. Environmental contaminants in food and water are extremely harmful to people with compromised immune systems and other developmental disabilities. Natural disasters brought on by global warming take a huge toll on people with disabilities who are 2 to 4 times more likely to die or sustain a critical injury during a disaster than people without disabilities.  Yet the needs of people with disabilities are often an afterthought when policy makers attempt to address these issues. We need a disability-inclusive approach when taking action to address threats to our environment and climate change.

In addition to discussing national priorities at NACDD, our final quarterly policy call of 2019 will have an interactive discussion with DD Council network members and experts on disability and the environment.  We will discuss proposed federal legislation addressing single-use plastic bans and why people with disabilities need to be involved in discussions and real solutions about threats to the environment.

We will also reserve time for you to discuss whether or not your state has taken an inclusive approach to issues concerning the environment when deliberating legislation such as plastic bans or other legislation.

Please feel free to share this invitation with other members of our DD Act Network including DD Council members, self-advocates, supporters and staff.
