Kennedy (JFK) School in Newark, NJ have been on a journey to explore the use of person-centered approaches in their school. They are one of many schools that are part of a statewide project called Person-Centered Approaches in Schools and Transition (PCAST) led by the Boggs Center for Developmental Disabilities at Rutgers University. In this webinar we will hear from a dynamic panel of JFK students, parents, educators, and administrators. It is now clear that planning ahead for emergencies is a must-do, particularly for those who rely on long-term services and supports for their daily wellbeing. What does person-centered planning for disasters look like? And how do we ensure that disaster responses are as person-centered as possible? In this panel, experts will describe what we have learned from recent events so we can be better equipped to respond to future disasters in a person-centered manner. Experts will also weigh in on the difference between personal planning and community planning, and why personal planning is never a substitute for comprehensive whole-community emergency preparedness, disaster response and recovery, and truly inclusive community resilience. A Note from ACL On Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month "Throughout the pandemic, ACL and our partners in the disability community have advocated for – and amplified the voices of – people with DD to help address barriers to self-determination and inclusion for people with DD. ACL has been working closely with our federal partners at the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and others to ensure that the critical needs of people with disabilities are included in the federal response. The ACL-funded DD network, including Protection & Advocacy agencies (P&As), State Councils for Developmental Disabilities, and University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs), have been advocating at the state and local levels on a range of issues impacting people with DD and supporting people in addressing the challenges created by the pandemic. You can find examples of that work on ACL’s COVID-19 webpage<https://hsri.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=abe97fa7a35fb4137a263a13a&id=95c76c700e&e=a03c2e5c4f>, where we have been sharing resources, lessons learned and new information as it becomes available.
