Washington, DC - The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities released the following statement today from CEO Donna Meltzer urging all people with disabilities to exercise their right to vote early, either by mail or in-person.
"This week, President Donald Trump set off alarm bells when he did not commit to a peaceful transition of power after election day. His troubling comments threaten the integrity of our democracy," said Meltzer, CEO of the NACDD, a non-partisan non-profit organization that supports the right of every individual, including those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), to vote. "The peaceful transition of leadership from one President to another is very important and is one of the most sacred tenets of our fragile democracy. By saying that he might not accept the outcome of the election, he is putting fear and confusion into the minds of the American people."
"Over the years, NACDD has worked diligently to ensure that people with I/DD know that they have the right to vote and tools to do so. Sadly, this year we have had to encourage many people to vote absentee or by mail-in ballot in order to stay safe and healthy because of COVID-19. Statements like the one made this week are concerning and mean that we must be even more diligent about voting. Therefore, we are encouraging those who can, to vote early either by mail or by voting in person if you can do so safely. If you are voting by mail please track your ballot to be sure it arrives and is counted.
"As we have been saying all along, make a plan to vote. Determine who you are voting for, determine whether you want to vote in person or by mail, and have a back-up plan ready in case of changes in your weather, transportation, or health. We urge everyone to remember that it is your right and your privilege to vote. For people with disabilities, Election Day is a day where they are seen and heard just like everyone else. We will work to ensure this right and privilege is preserved."
