WASHINGTON - Ahead of National Voter Registration Day on September 22, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) is calling for all voter mobilization efforts to include people with disabilities, and for an increase in accessibility for voters with developmental disabilities.
People with disabilities deserve to have the same rights as all others and NACDD has launched onevotenow.org<https://onevotenow.org/> as a hub for voter information to help ensure everyone can register to vote.
"Making sure everyone has easy access to vote is at the forefront of the national conversation and we must not forget to include people with disabilities," said Donna Meltzer, CEO of NACDD. "There is more work to be done to ensure that everyone, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, can and should exercise their right to vote."
As part of National Voter Registration Day, NACDD will also be hosting a Facebook Live<https://www.facebook.com/NACDD/> event on Thursday, September 24th at 2 p.m. EST on the importance of voting with Jeanette Senecal, senior Director of Mission Impact for the League of Women Voters and Emily Kranking, NACDD consultant, actress (Best Summer Ever), and disability rights advocate.
OneVoteNow<https://onevotenow.org/>, which is made possible by a grant from Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, through the Craig Newmark Philanthropies, is a central hub to find information about how to vote in the 2020 election. Structural barriers have historically made it more difficult for the disability community to vote. To make voting more accessible, NACDD gathers and shares information about participating in the election. The website provides the tools to ensure that everyone can cast their ballot by helping users register to vote and to make a plan to vote in person or by mail.
"Navigating the voting process can be daunting which is why we are working to make sure people feel empowered to register and vote," said Kranking. "Working to help people with disabilities feel engaged in our Democracy is extremely important and I'm so proud to be a part of this initiative."
