On July 26th, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in order to protect the civil rights of those with disabilities. For decades, activists and lawmakers fought to ensure that the ADA would pass. Now, 30 years later, we honor their legacy and look forward to the future.
To honor this 30 year legacy, NCLD is running a week-long campaign called ADA30: Week of Action<https://www.ncld.org/news/ada-30/celebrating-30-years-of-ada/>. This Week of Action is designed for parents, students, advocates and allies to take part in learning about the history of the disability rights movement, celebrating the progress made, and imagining the future of our movement.
We are inviting you, our partners, to celebrate with us next week on social media and through your own communications efforts. Feel free to use our messaging toolkit<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1keGusWLaCV7aQtx8Uv5Y1x3X4Zt1RHGj1MH-iblS8iQ/edit?usp=sharing> to engage throughout the week. Each day has a different theme and action for advocates to take part in.
* On Monday July 27th, go deep in learning about the history of the ADA: what prompted its creation and how it became a law.
* On Tuesday July 28th, hear from Members of Congress and advocates as they celebrate the successes and failures of the ADA in impacting the lives of people with disabilities
* On Wednesday July 29th, join us in imagining what the future could look like as we strengthen the protections of the ADA and ensure that all people with disabilities are protected.
* And on Thursday July 30th, we challenge you to make your voices heard and register to vote to ensure that we elect disability champions all across the country. Join us for a training on creating your very own Voting Squad at 5pm EST using the link: https://weall.vote/ncldsquad
