Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Tom Dooley, Biomedical Research Scientist and Entrepreneur

Dr. Thomas Dooley has served in various leadership roles in the pharmaceutical industry and in academia. He was the founder and CEO of several biomedical companies and the recipient of an endowed chair position at Southern Research. He received a PhD in molecular biology from Indiana University, followed by postdoctoral training at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London, England. He has authored 75 scientific publications, 15 issued patents, and 4 nonfiction books.

Dr. Dooley’s son was prescribed benzodiazepine medications for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder as an adolescent, which started him on the path toward addiction. Tragically, his son died from an opioid overdose in 2017, as one of 72,000 overdose victims that year. His son’s life struggles inspired Dr. Dooley to invent PanX® a new class of anti-anxiety medications. Dr. Dooley’s insights on the Opioid Crisis and potential solutions, include his own research that has led him toward an alternative therapy for anxiety disorders.

Nadia E. Charguia, MD, Associate Professor Director, Taking Care of Our Own Program, Director of Wellness, UNC Department of Psychiatry Medical Director, UNC Psychiatry Outpatient Services

Dr. Charguia is a trained child and adolescent psychiatrist. Dr. Charguia also works directly to support and promote the mental health needs of other physicians in addition to the promotion of wellness initiatives, in her role as Associate Director of the “Taking Care of Our Own” program at UNC.

The Taking of Our Own Program (TCOOO) is a service offered to all physicians, faculty, and house staff, within the UNC Healthcare System who would benefit from convenient and confidential expertise in wellness and mental health.

The physical and emotional health of physicians is often a secondary priority to the health of their patients, family, and friends. TCOOO was created to encourage health and wellness in those that heal others. A group of mental health providers meet individually with physicians to assess their unique factors which may contribute to symptoms of stress, mood changes, anxiety, and burnout.
