Summary of the University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Nutrition Policy Institute’s (NPI) efforts in Response to COVID 19:

  * The Nutrition Policy Institute has compiled resources<https://cspinet.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=56c53970e9e8f3069990102a6&id=4e26803986&e=638b51d85a> for consumers and UC Cooperative Extension county directors and advisors on federal & state policy action, local food initiatives, food safety & health, grocery stores, farmers markets & shopping, and guidance on safe access to the outdoors despite COVID-19.
  * NPI’s Thriving Schools team has been talking briefly with a few school district food service directors in Kaiser Permanente funded Thriving Schools around the country and in California about 1) how they are currently providing emergency food through the school breakfast and lunch program, what challenges they are having, and 2) what they anticipate their needs will be for the summer food program and next fall is students come back. This is to inform KP’s understanding of what the needs are as they consider their plans for working with schools as part of their community health effort.
  * Similarly, the NPI team that works on SNAP-Ed evaluation for the California Department of California is exploring how our evaluation efforts can be refocused to provide information that could be useful in the short and long term regarding nutrition-related needs, challenges and promising approaches to address the pandemic with an emphasis on school efforts and how SNAP-Ed is responding and could be supportive.

NPI has also:

  * Collaborated with the Berkeley Food Institute to develop a resource guide “How to Stay Food Secure and Eat Well Despite COVID-19” and county templates for UCCE advisors to compile community resources on prevention, what to do if you are sick, wages/pay reduction, emergency food assistance, child care resources, housing and rental assistance, and outdoor access in each county.
  * Shared relevant recommendations and resources from the February 2020 UC Global Food Initiative Food/Housing Insecurity report<https://cspinet.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=56c53970e9e8f3069990102a6&id=7740dd2b7c&e=638b51d85a> to UCOP State Government Relations, legislative director on how to support food security for newly sheltered homeless individuals.
  * Produced a 2-pager showing CA school districts how school meal service can be continued over spring. The flyer was disseminated to the California Department of Education.
  * Drafted, in collaboration with colleagues at Stanford and Johns Hopkin U, an Op-Ed on school meal service over spring break and submitted it to the Washington Post.
  * Participated in the Nutrition and Obesity Policy Research and Evaluation Network’s (NOPREN) COVID-19 Ad Hoc Working Group and led the Ad Hoc sub-committee for information dissemination and policy-advocacy which developed an Op-Ed published 3/30/20 in The Hill<https://cspinet.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=56c53970e9e8f3069990102a6&id=45d3560286&e=638b51d85a> on the importance of leveraging SNAP.
  * Signed a letter<https://cspinet.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=56c53970e9e8f3069990102a6&id=abdb6af46a&e=638b51d85a> sent on 3/25 to the USDA Food and Nutrition Services requesting additional nationwide waivers to ensure access to meals during COVID-19 and to ease the administrative burden on State/federal child nutrition agencies.
