I just want to chime in that the article raised a lot of attention yesterday here in DC. To be clear, this is an advertisement that Disability Scoop probably
should not have accepted. Although I’m really upset about this too, you should know that other coalition groups are commenting on email about this issue. There’s no “plan” to respond yet but some of the issues raised by other coalition partners:
4.
All of their
resident profiles assume independence with self-care, and the
application criteria require applicants to "Be free of aggressive or threatening behaviors, Have the ability to ambulate and transfer independently, Be able to follow a schedule of training and activity,
Have an interest in maintaining employment on or off campus." So, once again, the argument that this setting is for people with the most significant disabilities is ridiculous.
5.
Their daily
schedule on-line as well. SO, not person centered.
6.
They are comparing the cost to the cost of college (though this doesn't appear to be a four year gig) and that they increase prices if you wait to enroll.
7.
Finally, The fact that the whole complex appears to be surrounded by a road moat is just...disturbing.
As is the case, this is a bad thing. In terms of resources, just letting Disability Scoop know you are not happy with their decision to print the ad is probably
the best way to go. You can get their email here

Disability Scoop has multiple times promoted segregated schools, communities and “special” events like proms. I’ve written to them before that they need to be promoting best
practices, not continued segregation. Have never heard back….
