NEW ARTICLE ON HIGH-RISK POOLS

Previously, we have highlighted the work on high-risk pools of Jean Hall from the University of Kansas and our colleague on the Collaborative on Health Reform and Independent Living. Recently, she published a new article on high-risk pools for the Annals of Internal Medicine. Her new article “High-Risk Pools: An Illusion of Coverage That May Increase Costs for All in the Long Term” as well as links to some of her prior work on high-risk pools can be found in our news item.

Two new reports from the Kaiser Family Foundation examine some of the effects that the American Health Care Act (AHCA) would have. The reports focus on the effect the AHCA would have on state flexibility and on the coverage and premiums of older adults. Links to both reports can be found in our news item. Kaiser also published an issue brief this week on how premiums and cost-sharing are affecting low-income populations.

Milliman just published a new primer on pre-existing conditions and the importance the issues around them play in the larger health care debate.

The Georgetown University Center for Children and Families has published a new report on the effect of Medicaid in rural America. The report entitled “Medicaid in Small Towns and Rural America: A lifeline for Children, Families, and Communities” can be downloaded in our news item.

On Tuesday, AAHD was one of several disability organizations to co-sponsor the Save Medicaid Hill Day and Rally. The rally was attended by several senators who spoke about the importance of the Medicaid program. The Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) which is a coalition of national disability organizations released a press release regarding the events of the day. This press release and some pictures from the rally can be found in our news item.

If you’re interested in our advocacy efforts around the AHCA, then check out our recent Action Alert. We also have two blog posts on how the AHCA would affect people with disabilities – one in March when the bill was originally introduced and one in May on the final version of the bill passed by the House. You can also view our NDNRC statement on health reform which we released after the elections last November. In the statement entitled “Preserve the Protections Provided by the Affordable Care Act,” we call on Congress and the Administration to protect provisions in the ACA which have benefited people with disabilities. The full statement can be found on our website, where it is also available in a PDF download, by clicking here.

The University of Washington Healthy Aging Rehabilitation Research Training Center (RRTC) has released a new fact sheet entitled “How to Reduce Stress Through Mindfulness.” To download a copy of this fact sheet, click here.

Are you looking for local partners to help with outreach to the disability community? The NDNRC has Community Outreach Collaboratives (COCs) which work to increase collaborations in the community, dissemination and outreach efforts and enrollment of people with disabilities in the ACA marketplace. To find a COC, click here.

The NDNRC is an initiative aimed at providing cross-disability information and support to Navigators, enrollment specialists and consumers thereby ensuring people with disabilities receive accurate information when selecting and enrolling in the health insurance marketplaces. The NDNRC website can be found at: https://nationaldisabilitynavigator.org/.
