Steve,

We have a very strong sheltered workshop/facility-based employment services lobby too.  Our tack has been to educate policymakers about the outcomes for individuals when they are supported to have a job in the community with local employers.  We share stories from PwDD and employers.  We were very successful in having an impact on policymakers when we promoted a “Take Your Legislator to Work” campaign the fall before a legislative session when we had a bill for systems change in Medicaid to support more dollars for community supported employment services.  Having people invite their legislators to visit them in their workplace while they were in the home district was invaluable.

Subject: DD Councils State Use Law

Has anyone had much success bring their State Use law up to day and supporting Competitive Integrated Employment. (CIE)  I am finding a lot of resistance from the Sheltered Workshop industry.  Any ideas on how to make the case with the legislature?

I am using the Advisory Committee on Increasing Competitive Integrated Employment for Individuals with Disabilities as a resource.
