9:15-10:15am             PLENARY SESSION: Michelle “Sheli” Reynolds, Ph.D. -  “Supporting Families National Community of Practice: What it Means for Kansas”

Kansas has joined the Supporting Families National Community of Practice with 16 other states to enhance policies and practices that impact families with members with DD  across the lifespan. The overall goal of this initiative builds on the national definition to support families, with all of their complexity, strengths and unique abilities is so they can best support, nurture, love and facilitate opportunities for the achievement of self-determination, interdependence, productivity, integration, and inclusion in all facets of community life for their family members. Ms. Reynolds will share national developments and the opportunities for KS.

10:30-11:30am          PLENARY SESSION: Jonathan Martinis, J. D. - “Introduction to Supported Decision-Making”

In this session, Jonathan Martinis will discuss Supported Decision-Making (SDM), where people with disabilities work with trusted friends, family members, and professionals to help them understand the situations and choices they face, so they can make their own decisions.  When people with disabilities use SDM, they are more in control of their lives – they have more self-determination – which study after study has shown leads to better life outcomes, including increased employment, community integration, health, and safety.  Attendees will learn the theories and research behind SDM and ways to access SDM supports and services throughout the life course, including in Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Health Care, and Life Planning.

12:05-12:50pm          PLENARY SESSION: Kip Elliot, J.D. -“Kansas Guardianship Law: What Guardianship Is...and Isn’t”

 Guardians are give legal rights over “the person” and this can include many restrictions, including where a person lives and who they associate with on a daily basis.  The ward is protected under Kansas law and a guardian is required to include the ward in decision making and helping the ward live in the least restrictive environment possible. 

 

1:00-2:00pm              BREAKOUT SESSION:   “Supported Decision-Making: From Theory to Practice” (also available at 2:15pm) -  Jonathan Martinis & Jessalyn Gustin  

In this hands-on workshop, attendees will take part in exercises to identify personal goals in a number of life areas (such as employment, education, and living) and the supports and services they can access to achieve them.  Attendees will also learn strategies for using Supported Decision-Making to advocate for the services they want and need to help them reach their goals.

 

2:15-3:15pm              BREAKOUT SESSION:  “Supported Decision-Making: From Theory to Practice” (also available at 1:00pm)  - Jonathan Martinis & Jessalyn Gustin

PLENARY PANEL: Kip Elliot, Jessalyn Gustin, Judge Michael Joyce, Jean Krahn, Jonathan Martinis, Dr. Sheli Reynolds, and Hal Schultz

This 45-minute interactive session will provide panelists an opportunity to answer questions from participants that have been gathered during their Plenary and Breakout Sessions. There will also be opportunity for participants to ask questions of our Plenary and Breakout Session Speakers.
