We’ve been using a credit union – it’s free on weekdays and they only charge us on weekends because someone has to open and close it for us.  $150 per weekend!  DEAL OF THE CENTURY!

Hello from Oklahoma, where we completed our latest YLF last week!

We do both PIP and YLF coordination in-house and love doing it this way. We have never contracted out YLF.  PIP was contracted out a couple of different ways – one time COMPLETELY for 3 years (disaster), and for a LONG time (very successfully) with a lead facilitator who also acted as fiscal intermediary.  We lost our ability to do the “lead facilitator/fiscal intermediary” because of changes in contracting laws, but at least we had a contract with renewals in place so we were able to transition slowly to having this entirely in-house.  It’s a ton of work for our staff, but it IS manageable.

Heidi – I’m not sure why your costs are so high for YLF.  I think we pull ours off for about $20,000.

In terms of collaboration, we do get funding from Rehab. for interpreters, speakers and some materials. Next year, Education has indicated that they would like to be more involved.  Hooray.  We also spend a little bit of privately-raised cash on the event for things like pizza night that we would NEVER get through the state payment systems. Oh, and we do get some discounted rates from some of our long-time YLF speakers who want to “give back” to us. But I find this a very cost-efficient program for us.

I’m going after the CILs next year for money – they have that new core service and they need to pony up.

That said, we have always had an issue with getting good and plentiful applications and our staff works her ass off to get what she gets.  Would love great ideas on this.

PIP we get some speaker discounts from long-time speakers, but other than that, it’s all us. Again, we’ve made some good moves here, chief among them NOT hosting PIP in a hotel where the catering is stupid expensive. We use a credit union meeting room (they charge us $150 for the weekend) and we do a separate and very inexpensive catering contract. Sometimes we get hotdogs for lunch, but it’s fine. I think our Partners get that it’s THEIR tax dollars and we aren’t going to be serving expensive meals. That’s about the only REAL tip I have for PIP cost containment, but I’m not nearly the size of Texas!

Good luck, Beth! We’re pulling for ya!

Ann

Thanks Steve and Beth.  We get $12K from VDOE but that’s all we have in terms of collaborative funding.

In Kansas we have a Kansas Youth Empowerment Academy that we have provide some funding for the annual Youth Leadership Forum.  KCDD provides a small part of the funding most years.  They have been effective in raising funds from several different sources.

Hi all: we have been successful in Wisconsin getting DVR to pay for youth who our DVR clients and have an IP E that would indicate a need for this kind of training. With WI oh a and state requirements to spend 15% on youth, much of the YLF can count toward PETS. We recruit heavily through DVR and DPI and have run full programs of 28-30 the last 3 years. We have a coordinator who is an alum but counsellors are all volunteer alums. Between our contribution of $5000 and what DVR kicks in the program is covered.

Hi Heidi -

I would be interested in what you hear. The Wyoming Council put our YLF on hold starting last year because of the same issues. We have started conversations with other local, state and federal agencies/organizations in a round table discussion to see if we are duplicating services and to see if we need to just support one-another. It is fledgling, as we have had one meeting with about 12 people,  but it was eye-opening as there is major duplication, and also a desire by the department of ed to get something going in schools. Another interesting thing is we had a 10 year girl in Pine Bluffs Wyoming start something in her school district that is integrated and well received by all students.

Just found out about that so we are looking into it and have discussed bringing her to our next meeting to present what she is doing.

Great timing (for me) on the TX PIP  RFP as I am once again looking into contracting vs. in house options.

Also examining what to do in the future re youth self advocacy training.  Despite the fact that people love it when they get there, it was like pulling teeth to get 22 applications for our Youth Leadership forum this year despite substantial marketing and recruitment efforts.  I believe it is in part due to the fact that there are so many more youth leadership training opportunities out there than there were prior, including in Virginia a very successful Educ Dept program, I’m Determined (which I think is like Kentucky’s I Can program).  Point is we can’t keep doing things the same way and hope they will be more successful. Especially with a very expensive program--$140K for 22 students for 4 days (not to mention other indirect costs).  So all that being said, would love to know if any of you are doing Youth Leadership training other than YLF. What is it? If you contract out can you share a copy of the RFP or contract?  If someone else has asked this recently, I apologize. I try to save things that come across the list serve but I don’t have anything on this area. Thanks as always!  Heidi
