Subject: Re: DD Councils YOUTH TRAINING QUESTION
Hi Heidi -
I would be interested in what you hear. The Wyoming Council put our YLF on hold starting last year because of the same issues. We have started conversations with other local, state and federal agencies/organizations in a round table discussion to see if we are duplicating services and to see if we need to just support one-another. It is fledgling, as we have had one meeting with about 12 people, but it was eye-opening as there is major duplication, and also a desire by the department of ed to get something going in schools. Another interesting thing is we had a 10 year girl in Pine Bluffs Wyoming start something in her school district that is integrated and well received by all students.
Just found out about that so we are looking into it and have discussed bringing her to our next meeting to present what she is doing.
That's it from out west -

Great timing (for me) on the TX PIP RFP as I am once again looking into contracting vs. in house options.
Also examining what to do in the future re youth self advocacy training. Despite the fact that people love it when they get there, it was like pulling teeth to get 22 applications for our Youth Leadership forum this year despite substantial marketing and recruitment efforts. I believe it is in part due to the fact that there are so many more youth leadership training opportunities out there than there were prior, including in Virginia a very successful Educ Dept program, I’m Determined (which I think is like Kentucky’s I Can program). Point is we can’t keep doing things the same way and hope they will be more successful. Especially with a very expensive program--$140K for 22 students for 4 days (not to mention other indirect costs). So all that being said, would love to know if any of you are doing Youth Leadership training other than YLF. What is it? If you contract out can you share a copy of the RFP or contract? If someone else has asked this recently, I apologize. I try to save things that come across the list serve but I don’t have anything on this area. Thanks as always! Heidi

RFP: Partners in Policymaking
The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) will support a Partners in Policymaking program in Texas. A Request for Proposals (RFP) has been posted for a contractor to work with TCDD staff to coordinate and facilitate the program.
Partners in Policymaking is an advanced leadership and advocacy training program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and family members. The goal of the program is to educate participants to become active partners with policymakers. Partners in Policymaking provides participatory training in best practices, current issues, trends in service provision, and advocacy skills to promote citizen involvement and leadership. Program graduates often assume leadership roles in a variety of community and statewide organizations.
Proposals must be delivered to the Texas Education Agency Purchasing, Contracts and Agency Services Division before 2 p.m. CT on Thursday, July 7, 2016. Any inquiries about this RFP must be referred to Debra Rosas at xxxxxx@tea.texas.gov. More information about this RFP is available on the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website.
