Related to Tina, her colleague Jonathan Martinas at Quality Trust was the attorney for Jenny Hatch and is a VERY dynamic presenter on supported decision-making. He will be the keynoter at our Self Determination Conference. He spoke to our board via conference call at 5 p.m. at night and people didn’t want to stop asking questions: that’s how engaging he was.

Highly recommend for any conference where supported decision-making is a topic.

Beth

We recently hosted Tina Campanella from DC.  She’s on the supported decision making board something….  And she’s a member of the DC DDC as I recall.  I thought she was fabulous.  Did keynote and breakout and both were excellent.

I am forwarding this announcement for two reasons.  1) to let you know that we’re hosting an Aging and Disability Conference with the Iowa Governor and 2) to ask if you have recommendations for speakers/topics.  I have taken the stance that rather than parallel tracks, we need sessions that relate well to both elders and people with disabilities.  Thus far, we’re looking at civic engagement, supported decision-making, employment, self-determination, HCBS.  If you have other suggestions let me know.  If you have particularly good speakers to recommend, let me know.  I appreciate any assistance you can provide to make this a good thing!  Becky

The Iowa Governor's Conference on Aging & Disabilities in May 2016 will shine a regional and national spotlight on the steps Iowa is taking to meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities that accompany the ever-changing aging and disability communities.

The conference is being hosted by the Iowa Department on Aging and the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council, in partnership with the National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities, and directed by a steering committee made up of Iowa business and community leaders and chaired by Lt. Governor Reynolds.  Our theme - "Disruptive Innovations" - focuses on the myriad ways Iowa's aging and disability communities are evolving: culturally, economically, socially, technologically, etc.

To engage professionals, policymakers, students and subject-matter experts in a thoughtful dialogue about re-imagining the aging and disability networks for Iowa and the entire Midwest, we invite you to submit a presentation for this year's conference.
