Hi Brett,

As a newbie to the NACDD family, I am so excited that I can reply with some helpful information on behalf of Nebraska’s DD Council. J

We would not introduce legislation for a constituent, but rather would also explain the process and perhaps be able to give them a heads up of various senators who may be more receptive to their issue.  Nebraska has an advantage in having the unicameral legislature.  With only 49 senators, we have a smaller and more interactive legislative body.  Senators are available to interact directly with constituents.

Historically, our State Council has helped write technical language along with other agencies including our fiscal agency for the same legislative bill; has advocated with other advocacy groups for a bill to be passed; has taken a concept to senators or their legislative aides for the content of legislation that would be beneficial if introduced; and has been contacted by committees and senators’ offices in the legislature to comment on draft language or for clarification of certain issues.

We have a new Legislative and Advocacy Committee each session that reviews legislative bills introduced.  They make recommendations to the State Council regarding bills to support or to oppose.  This is done by testifying or writing letters. The bills are followed with updates throughout the legislative session in Newsline publications mailed from our office.

Greetings everyone:

As a relatively new staff person for the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council, I greatly appreciate the interactions amongst all of the participants on the list-serve and hope you would be able to provide guidance on a matter that has come across my desk. Recently, a request for legislation was forwarded to me from a constituent. The question I have, how involved are you in having legislation introduced? Do you work directly with legislators? Or, have constituents work with legislators with language you have prepared? What are the thresholds you incorporate? Any help you could provide will be very much appreciated.
