Dear Mighty DD Councils,
The State of Illinois has proposed a bill to abolish 14c/subminimum wage in order to safeguard the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities. Although this bill
has yet to be passed, it is an essential step in the right direction. This move will ensure that workers with disabilities are paid fairly and that their wages will not be based on their disability status. The elimination of 14c/subminimum wage will open up
new opportunities for people with disabilities and help to create a workforce that is more reflective of our population as a whole.
Help us shine a light on lived experiences. In
order to recognize and understand the struggles and challenges faced by people with disabilities, as well as celebrate their successes, we are seeking examples of 14c/Subminimum wage elimination PSAs and/or access to family members and self-advocates across
the nation who would be interested in sharing stories about their lived experience transitioning from subminimum wages to competitive wages.
Illinois’ Veto session takes place in October 2023 and we need your help to have something shared with the public soon. Please share whatever you can with Mariel Hamer-Sinclair
(ICDD Associate Director of Program & Policy) at xxxxxx@illinois.gov.
We are stronger together and hope to hear from you! Thanks for all that you do.
In your service,
