Hi Liz
Echoing Aaron that Illinois is working on building successful approaches. We are actively working in this arena and I am happy to set up a time to chat about what we have done. We are casting a wide net that includes a pilot program for matching people with DD to supportive housing and using that data to inform developers of need. We are just getting started there but I finally feel like we have some traction. In addition, we are working with CSH to link DD Providers with workshops that help them learn how to create their own developments. We have been at it for a while and are really learning that it is a multi pronged simultaneous approach to get anywhere. It has to be the right mix of education for people with DD, their families/supporters, case coordination, providers AND developers. Happy to chat!

Hi Liz, hope you are doing well. CA DD Council has advocated for dedicated funding from the state to build housing for people with IDD, but we have not found a successful approach, yet. We will keep trying. In 2018, we produced a statewide strategic housing framework, which has information on ideas across the country. Here’s a link. There may be helpful information or ideas in there for your Council. Best, Aaron

Greetings everyone,
I hope you are well and have enjoyed the holidays. I am writing because our Council has developed a public policy cross disability coalition as part of its State Plan, and they have chosen to work on advancing accessible and affordable housing for persons with ID/DD in Puerto Rico. As part of our work plan, our Council will advocate for incentives to builders that create more accessible and affordable housing in Puerto Rico. Has any other Council advocated for incentives that would provide more available housing to persons with ID/DD? We would really like to know more about the advocacy strategies that your Council implemented in order to achieve these results, and about how you helped the State identify and secure funding to implement these improvements. Thanks in advance for any help or information you may provide.
Cordially,
Liz Mariel Candelario-García, MA.
