Hi Jaime –

One of us from Texas will complete the survey. We still do quite a few leadership and advocacy training programs but don’t currently fund PIP. Like Brian, though, we are also thinking about how we might be able to do it in a less costly manner (we spent $385K per year). We had the opposite “issue” from Becky – we had people who were frustrated because they applied repeatedly (someone told me they applied 3 or 4 times) and couldn’t get in because there were so many applications and theirs never rose to the top.

I was going to complete the survey but have no info to share because we currently don't offer this type training. We did sponsor PIP for 10 years at $100k/per year.

I would like to see your results as I have now and again given thought to ways to do this again in a less costly;y manner.

Thanks.

Brian

Greetings DD Councils!

Like many of you, the Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities offers a leadership training program for self-advocates and family members.  Our program was modeled after the Minnesota Council's Partners in Policymaking program.  We are currently planning to update our program and want to learn from other Councils about what you do and how you do it.

We developed a survey to gather good information about your programs.  Please help us collect this information by taking our survey by December 31st.  Here is the link:

If you'd like to receive the survey results, please carefully enter your correct contact information at the beginning of the survey and let us know you want to receive the results.

Thank you in advance!

What Brian Said!  We also have a history of offering PIP.  We ended the project because we couldn’t get enough participants each year due to other obligations—e.g. work.  However we see a need to do something with similar content and have been talking about how to offer things differently on an ongoing basis so that people can opt in when they need the information training to accomplish what they want.  We are now doing a map of training offered in Iowa by advocacy organizations, the PTIC, the Parent Educator Coordinators with our Area Education Agencies to look at the gaps and geographical coverage.  So, I ditto Brian’s request for information you receive.  Becky

I did fill out the survey and am looking forward to results. We have offered a PIP for 12 yrs. This year we don't have one due to HR and fiscal resources and fiscal resources. The program costs us 160K a year. We can't sustain that. Our Council just voted to hold the program again beginning Sept 2015 nut we are going to have to reduce the budget by perhaps reducing put of state speakers, travel costs, web learning, etc. We are just as of today going to b begin strategizing. I appreciate Jamie sending out this survey!

Thanks Jaime.

The survey asked some great questions and I am interested in learning the perspectives of other Councils on this important program.

Thanks for asking!
