Wednesday, and that means it’s time for a roundup email. Here are important things that have crossed NACDD’s attention and of course, Erin Prangley’s excellent slides:

IEC – Institute for Exception Care is the newest organization to be established to address healthcare issues for people with I/DD. IEC’s CEO is Hongmai (Mai) Pham, MD, MPH and mother of a son with autism. This new organization, based in Washington, DC (out of the offices of The Arc of the US) is dedicating to improving healthcare and addressing equity. We’re still looking for State Captain Volunteers! As a reminder, here’s what this is all about:

Hello EDS!

Hi everyone—the 2022 Disability Policy Seminar (DPS) registration is open and we are excited about providing a hybrid event with virtual Hill visits.  To help organize the Hill visits, I am asking DD Councils (staff or ED or member) to volunteer to be a “state captain.” Please let me or know if you, or staff from your chapter, are interested in becoming a state captain. Below is additional information about the virtual visits and the state captain program.  You do not have to be attending DPS in-person to be a state captain.

About DPS Virtual Hill Day

Due to the hybrid nature of the event this year and the unlikelihood of in-person Hill visits, we will need to be flexible about scheduling the virtual hill visits. If possible, the in person attendees and virtual attendees will participate together in the virtual Hill visits. The state captains should aim for scheduling the virtual meeting between March 30 and April 6th.  You will play a vital role in bringing advocates from your state together to have a unified presence and consistent messaging at Hill meetings.

The virtual meetings are an opportunity for DPS participants to virtually engage with their Members of Congress and staff and advocate for important policy initiatives. All DPS participants will be invited to participate at the time of registration and in subsequent communications by the DPS planning committee. State delegations and meetings will be organized and facilitated by State Captains with support from the DPS Hill Day work group.  We hope to have 1-3 volunteers per state to share the work and the DPS partner organizations are asking their members and chapters to volunteer.

State Captain Program

DPS will rely upon State Captains to organize the state delegations and set up the virtual Hill Day appointments. State Captains are volunteers who will assist other DPS registrants from their state in making appointments with their legislators, preparing for, and participating in the 2022 DPS Virtual Hill Visits. They will play a vital role in bringing advocates from their state together to have a unified presence and consistent messaging at Hill meetings.  I have attached the state captain packet to provide you with additional information about the program and sample language you can use if you agree to be a state captain.  We will hold a zoom meeting in February to answer any questions—more details to follow.

COVID-19 Communications Study

As part of its work with NCRN, AUCD is doing a study to test COVID-19 vaccine ads to make sure they are accessible and useful to all. This study is an online survey that tracks your eyes when you are looking at an ad. This study will be done on a computer or laptop that has a camera.

If you are interested in participating in this study and are a person with an intellectual or developmental disability between the ages of 18-24, please email Ashley Jacinth-Salmon to learn more at xxxxxx@gsu.edu.

AUCD Efforts with the National COVD-19 Resiliency Network

Vacunda? Vacundo? Vacundx?

As part of its work with NCRN, AUCD invited network members to participate in NCRN's Regional Community Coalition (RCC), which were meetings held to build partnerships among regions across the U.S. Robin Shaffer from Georgetown University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) shared a story on addressing the needs of the community through inclusive language.
