NACDD is excited to continue its partnership with David Whalen of the Niagara University Disability Awareness Training to present to you a webinar on Emergency Management for people with Disabilities on June 30^th at 230pm ET.

This webinar will introduce you to emergency management as it relates to people with disabilities, what it took to get whole community approach as a concept, how inclusive planning and active participation are applied, and what your role is in advancing the cause.

Niagara University Disability Awareness Training concluded it’s highly acclaimed Emergency Management program funded by the NYS Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. The program brings together the disability community and those with a role in disaster emergency response with the intent to educate on all matters related to proper response for those with disabilities and access and functional needs.

Designed to address planning, preparedness, response and recovery as it relates to people with disabilities and access and functional needs, NU DAT defines the topic as regulated by the Americans with Disabilities Act and established by FEMA and recognized by the NYS Emergency Management Association.

A major component is the WHOLE community approach, which calls for people with disabilities and access and functional needs be included in the planning process and actively involved in all aspects of preparedness as it relates to individual and group needs. Partnerships are developed, which allows emergency managers, Red Cross personnel, CERT and others to benefit from the input and review of those who know best, specific to their disability and personal/professional experiences and background.

It is imperative that emergency management be present and reach out to those entities that have a role in the local/county planning and encourage them to attend. We can no longer be in a position where not knowing what to do is accepted. The pandemic has exposed oversights in ‘traditional’ emergency planning and preparedness. NU DAT has identified the issues and challenges, in collaboration with fellow disability advocates, and what needs to be addressed.
