Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Activities Announced

The schedule of activities for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which will be observed in March, has been announced. This year’s theme is No Limits! Together We Can. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan issued a public proclamation that the month of March would be recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to “increase public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with disabilities.” Developmental disabilities are impairments in physical, learning, language, and behavior areas.

A proclamation for the observance of the month will be signed by Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lieutenant Governor Joshua Tenorio on Friday, February 28, 2020, 10:00 a.m. at Government House. The Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Community Outreach Fair will take place on Sunday, March 1, 2020, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Micronesia Mall with a legislative resolution being presented by the 35^th Guam Legislature. Additionally, many community partners including the Guam Developmental Disabilities Council (GDDC); the University of Guam Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service (Guam CEDDERS); Guam Legal Services Corporation – Disability Law Center (GLSC); the Guam System for Assistive Technology (GSAT); Special Olympics Guam; the Down Syndrome Association of Guam; and Autism Community Together will host various events and activities throughout the month. These will include conferences, exhibitions, an athletic competition, meetings, masses, the GSAT Fair, and the GDDC general membership meeting. The public is invited to attend the events but prospective participants are advised that events may require pre-registration.
