Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR)

The purpose of the SBIR<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDQsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMDAxMjkuMTYyNzQxNTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2FjbC5nb3Yvbm9kZS80MjIifQ.ANjuU0OoF8SZjBZFxnYx8BzOULFYDsvLP9B_eqNoeh0/br/74454308422-l> program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector, strengthen the role of small business in meeting federal research or research and development needs, and improve the return on investment from federally-funded research for economic and social benefits to the nation. The goal is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through research and development of products generated by small businesses, and to increase the commercial application of NIDILRR-supported research results and development products.

Phase I: The objective of Phase I is to determine the scientific or technical merit and feasibility of proposed research or research & development (R/R&D) efforts that appear to have commercial potential. This feasibility is a prerequisite for further support in Phase II. Phase I awards are for periods up to six months in amounts as indicated in the Funding Opportunity Announcements.

Phase II: The objective of Phase II is to continue the research or R&D effort initiated in Phase I with approaches that exhibit potential for commercial application. Phase II awards are for periods up to two years in amounts as indicated in the Funding Opportunity Announcements.

Organizations that apply must quality as a small business as defined by the Small Business Administration. Additionally, the primary employment of the principal investigator must be with the small business as the time of the award and during the period of the proposed research. The applying firm must perform at least two-thirds of the research.
