Good Morning:  I am a big believer in balance in my work and all that I do.  I think there needs to be both.  CLC should be woven into everything we do.  But I believe that is a journey that is never really finished…because we should be constantly learning and quite frankly we miss the mark and make mistakes.  So as we strive to incorporate CLC in all we do, I think we need a group or sub-committee to focus on this, assess where we drop the ball and how to be better, and push us to learn more and do better.

I also think there is a need for balance in working with groups.  I am a tremendous advocate for inclusion, but I also honor the safe space of affinity groups.  When I served on the board of the Society for Disability Studies, inclusion, equity, and the intersection of different identities was deeply valued.  However, we carved out dedicated time for affinity or special interest groups, where folks would feel safe to discuss issues that were deeply important to them that they didn’t feel they could communicate when meeting within a whole group.  When I was working at a large university, affinity groups were funded and encouraged.  Affinity group members were able to meet privately to celebrate their identities, share their common interests/concerns and then work to bring issues to the larger university system inclusively with allies.  These issues could be positive or negative. Sometimes you need that common bond and support to work through how you are feeling, where you are coming from, and then how best to create change with all involved.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to get y’alls thoughts on this. I’ve heard so many people say things like what I put in the subject – “CLC should be a part of everything we do.” I feel like it has almost become a buzz phrase. I agree with the sentiment, but I worry that it gets used to dismiss having dedicated groups of people thinking specifically about CLC issues, or that it prevents those groups from forming in the first place. I think I am starting to move to a place of thinking that we need both – we need a dedicated group thinking about CLC issues AND we need to weave it into everything. Maybe one day we won’t need a separate group, but I feel like we’re not there yet.

On a parallel thought, I see the same thing happen with self-advocacy groups sometimes – we don’t support self-advocacy committees because we say people with disabilities need to be a part of every other group. Again, I agree with this sentiment, but also feel like self-advocates need dedicated space to come together sometimes, no?

I would love to hear your thoughts!

Alison

Hi Alison

Thank you for bringing this up as NACDD is currently going through this issue specifically on the advocacy point.  As you have seen we just sent out the save the date for the new SA Discussion Series.  We were asked by advocates to create a forum so that they can talk about issues that they want to talk about, but if we do not open it up to everyone are we truly being inclusive?  At what cost to inclusion is having a place for only advocates?

Good morning,

I agree with Alison; seeing this occur.  What I’m seeing with saying CLC is in everything we do, then gives people the impression that it doesn’t need to be addressed somehow.  Like it was addressed in the past, and now it’s done.  Like thinking, “well, someone else already makes sure it is in what we do, so we don’t need to think about it anymore.”

Agree Alison- need both.  At least for now.

Subject: "CLC should be woven into everything we do"

Alison
