Hi Alison

Thank you for bringing this up as NACDD is currently going through this issue specifically on the advocacy point.  As you have seen we just sent out the save the date for the new SA Discussion Series.  We were asked by advocates to create a forum so that they can talk about issues that they want to talk about, but if we do not open it up to everyone are we truly being inclusive?  At what cost to inclusion is having a place for only advocates?

Subject: "CLC should be woven into everything we do"

Hi everyone,

I wanted to get y’alls thoughts on this. I’ve heard so many people say things like what I put in the subject – “CLC should be a part of everything we do.” I feel like it has almost become a buzz phrase. I agree with the sentiment, but I worry that it gets used to dismiss having dedicated groups of people thinking specifically about CLC issues, or that it prevents those groups from forming in the first place. I think I am starting to move to a place of thinking that we need both – we need a dedicated group thinking about CLC issues AND we need to weave it into everything. Maybe one day we won’t need a separate group, but I feel like we’re not there yet.

On a parallel thought, I see the same thing happen with self-advocacy groups sometimes – we don’t support self-advocacy committees because we say people with disabilities need to be a part of every other group. Again, I agree with this sentiment, but also feel like self-advocates need dedicated space to come together sometimes, no?

I would love to hear your thoughts!

Alison
